Domain Name FAQ

1. What is a Domain name?

A domain name is the string of alphanumeric characters followed by the familiar “.com”, “.net”, “.org”, or other top-level domains. Examples include:

  • vooju.com
  • ida.gov.sg
  • brown.edu
  • redcross.org

Note that “www.vooju.com” would not be called a domain name but a website address or, more formally, uniform resource locator (URL).

There are many variants of domain names on the internet; Vooju is an accredited registrar by SGNIC of .sg domain names. At the moment, we are unable to register other variants of domain names such as ‘.com, .tv, .info, etc’.

2. What is SGNIC and where does it fit in?

SGNIC or the Singapore Network Information Centre, is the body that regulates all domain names ending with .sg

They formulate and enforce the policies in place for .sg domain names and can be reached at www.sgnic.sg

Vooju is proud to be an accredited registrar of SGNIC.

3. What are the requirements for registering a .SG domain name?

The information presented is the current set of requirements set by SGNIC in summarised form.

  • An applicant in this category must be a commercial entity and must be registered with Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA), International Enterprise Singapore (IE Singapore) or any professional bodies.

  • A foreign applicant may apply for a .com.sg domain name provided that it appoints a locally registered entity as its Administrative Contact. The foreign registrant is required to submit to the registrar a duly authorized letter to confirm the appointment of the locally registered entity.

  • Government bodies which register their names in the .gov.sg suffix may, if they deem necessary, register the same name, their acronyms and/or their service/scheme names in this category.

org.sg
-for societies, charitable bodies and other organisations not classified elsewhere

  • Generally, an applicant in this category should be registered with Registry of Societies (ROS).

  • This also includes other applicants, such as community clubs, churches, grassroot organisations, embassies, etc.

  • Government bodies which register their names in the .gov.sg suffix may, if they deem necessary, register the same name, their acronyms and/or their service/scheme names in this category.

net.sg
-for info-comm operators and network providers

  • An applicant in this category is required to demonstrate to the registrar that it is operating or providing an info-comm network in Singapore (such as possessing a valid licence from IDA).

  • Government bodies which register their names in the .gov.sg suffix may, if they deem necessary, register the same name, their acronyms and/or their service/scheme names in this category.

edu.sg

  • An applicant in this category should be an educational institution registered with the Ministry of Education (MOE).

  • Government bodies which register their names in the .gov.sg suffix may, if they deem necessary, register the same name, their acronyms and/or their service/scheme names in this category.

.sg
- for all

  • An applicant in this category is required to submit an application to an SGNIC accredited registrar. The applicant must have a valid Singapore postal address as the Administrative Contact.

  • A foreign applicant may apply for a domain name in this category provided that it appoints a local agent having a valid Singapore postal address as the Administrative Contact.

4. How do I register for a domain name?

Simply type the domain name you wish to register in our Domain Name Search Box on the left side of the main web site. Alternatively, if you are an existing registrant with Vooju, you can log into your account and click the Register .SG Domain link.

5. What do I get when I register a domain name with Vooju?

Registration of domain names with Vooju includes the processing your registration, free domain name parking and url forwarding.

6. What is domain name parking?

Parked domain names are names that have been registered but do not point or resolve to a web site. Domain names may be parked for a variety of reasons, for example while waiting for the web design to be completed or registering the name now for a planned future project.

7. What is url forwarding?

Url forwarding a domain name enables you to direct incoming traffic from your parked domain to an already existing Web site. Thus, when someone attempts to access your domain, he or she is automatically redirected to the web site of your choice.

8. How long does it take for my domain name to be active?

New domains and changes to domains may take up to 48 hours to become effective. This is due to the number of networks involved, and the fact that those networks are controlled by several different agencies.

This delay applies to all domains and all Registrars. Please allow for this delay when planning Web sites or configuring a domain to work with your email.

9. How much does it cost?

Vooju charges $45 per year for each .sg domain name registration.

10. How can I check if a domain name has been registered and by whom?

You can use the WHOIS facility on Vooju’s main page or on SGNIC website at www.sgnic.sg

11. Is there any limit to the number of domain names I can register?

There is no limit to the number of domain names that can be registered or transferred as long as the requirements for each domain name are met.

12. How do I cancel my domain name registration?

Please contact us from your account registered email address to state that you wish to cancel your domain name registration.

Note that after the first 7 days of registration, it is not possible to refund your payment in the event of a cancellation of domain name registration. There is also a $10 admin fee for refunds.

If your domain name registration is rejected by the Registry, a refund will be processed. This is also subject to a $10 admin fee.
